I am often asked questions about how to become a braille transcriptionist and if there is a way to accomplish this through an online course. As far as I know, the National Library Service is the only body that certifies a transcriptionist after submission of a braille manuscript. If you are a high school graduate and an American Citizen, you may prepare for this manuscript free of charge by using the National Library Services materials and submitting them to the instructors in Washington DC, or by working with an instructor in your area. The best way to locate one and get further information on transcription requirements is to contact the National Library Service at the following:
Braille Development Section National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped Library of Congress 101 Independence Ave. S.E. Washington, D.C. 20540 Phone: 800-424-8567
If you wish to pay for a college degree and obtain certification, you would work with a college to obtain the braille skills and then submit your manuscript to the National Library Service. One such program is listed below:
Northwest Vista College http://www.accd.edu/nvc/areas/braille/default.htm
They are considering an online program, so if that is something in which you are interested, I would recommend visiting the web page and giving them a call.
I am also often asked about free braille software. There is a free version that is not translation software and not accessible to the blind. It is produced by Duxbury. It is a good program to use if you are sighted are taking a braille course such as Hadley's Contracted Braille Course:
Perky Duck from Duxbury http://www.duxburysystems.com/product2.asp?product=Perky%20Duck&level=free&action=up
I hope this information has been helpful. If you are currently a sighted professional working in the field of visual impairment, Hadley's Introduction to Braille (also available online) and Contracted Braille (soon to be offered online) are helpful in obtaining braille skills for practical applications.
Sincerely,
Nafisa Keels Instructor, Hadley School for the Blind
